Terrain: Remote Road
Recomended Levels: Any
Encounter Type: Miscellaneous
Danger Level: Any
Story XP Bonus: 100 +

Encounter Description:     The PCs are riding on a remote road, far from any settlement or city. They come upon obvious signs of a struggle. The road is scuffed, and there are a few blood spots in the dust. Also, a shattered short sword is found at the side of the road.
Lying near the edge of the road is a fallen money purse. It is partially open, and a few coins have spilled out into the dirt. The bag contains 1d10 gp, 1d20 sp, and 1d100 cp. There is also a 10% chance that the bag contains 1d6 pp.

DM's Explanation:     A group of bandits has had a disagreement over their spoils. After attacking a killing a traveliing merchant some two days earlier, they were still squabbling as to how to divide the money.
Finally, their angry words came to blows. This explains the blood marks and shattered sword - but why did the bandits leave the money behind? A troll, attracted by the sounds of battle, burst onto the scene, chasing the bandits into the woods. A PC with the tracking ability may be able to spot the troll's footprints, and the path the bandits took into the woods.
The troll has killed each bandit, but had no interest in the money in the road. Whether or not the PCs chose to investigate this strange situation is up to them. The troll may be long gone, or sitting in the woods, digesting its supper. It's up for the DM to decide.

Experience Bonus:     A minimum of 100 xp for finding the bag and exploring the surrounding area. Adjust upward based on subsequent events.
